When a GPS signal is detected by your phone, a satellite will appear on the map. The position of the satellite is calculated as the spot on earth that the satellite is directly above. More information for how this is calculated can be found on this blog post.

Hi John (February 8, 2011), I had to use the location to get the satellite azimuth and elevation. There really is no other way.
